It's What We Do
What I like about you is that you're a complete asshole, and I'm an asshole right back, but we can both acknowledge that fact and move on from it and continue enjoying being assholes to each other. It's so beautifully noncommittal. I can never hate you for offending me, because I must always expect you to offend me. We abuse each other, torment each other, and tear each other apart but always end up unscathed because we do it from afar. There's never enough disclosure to break down our barricades, to put us in real danger. So we can just keep shooting our cannons, yielding our swords, relishing in the sheer relief of all the non-destruction we cause, without guilt, without ceasing.
And, suddenly, before either of us can predict what comes next, one brick falls, then another, and another, and we're left standing there, exposed, our weapons worthless, seeing into the eyes of the enemy.
